Higher-order modulation instability in fiber optics

2012

We report on analytical, numerical and experimental studies of higher-order modulation instability in fiber optics. This new form of instability arises from the nonlinear superposition of elementary instabilities and manifests as complex, yet deterministic temporal pulse break-up dynamics. We use the Darboux transformation to analytically describe the process and compare with experiments. In particular, we show how suitably low frequency modulation on a continuous wave field allows for the excitation of higher-order modulation instability through cascaded four-wave mixing.

Seeded and spontaneous higher-order modulation instability

2012

International audience; We report on the dynamics of the higher-order modulation instability in optical fibers and show that it is the very same phenomenon that underpins the emergence of rogue waves in the early stage of supercontinuum generation.

Higher-Order Modulation Instability in Nonlinear Fiber Optics

2011

International audience; We report theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of higher-order modulation instability in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This higher-order instability arises from the nonlinear superposition of elementary instabilities, associated with initial single breather evolution followed by a regime of complex, yet deterministic, pulse splitting. We analytically describe the process using the Darboux transformation and compare with experiments in optical fiber. We show how a suitably low frequency modulation on a continuous wave field induces higher-order modulation instability splitting with the pulse characteristics at different phases of evolution r…

A statistical analysis of the three-fold evolution of genomic compression through frame overlaps in prokaryotes

2007

Abstract Background Among microbial genomes, genetic information is frequently compressed, exploiting redundancies in the genetic code in order to store information in overlapping genes. We investigate the length, phase and orientation properties of overlap in 58 prokaryotic species evaluating neutral and selective mechanisms of evolution. Results Using a variety of statistical null models we find patterns of compressive coding that can not be explained purely in terms of the selective processes favoring genome minimization or translational coupling. The distribution of overlap lengths follows a fat-tailed distribution, in which a significant proportion of overlaps are in excess of 100 base…

Thermalization and condensation in an incoherently pumped passive optical cavity

2011

International audience; We study theoretically and numerically the condensation and the thermalization of classical optical waves in an incoherently pumped passive Kerr cavity. We show that the dynamics of the cavity exhibits a turbulent behavior that can be described by the wave turbulence theory. A mean-field kinetic equation is derived, which reveals that, in its high finesse regime, the cavity behaves essentially as a conservative Hamiltonian system. In particular, the intracavity turbulent field is shown to relax adiabatically toward a thermodynamic equilibrium state of energy equipartition. As a consequence of this effect of wave thermalization, the incoherent optical field undergoes …

Bilateral Ultrathin Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty vs. Bilateral Penetrating Keratoplasty in Fuchs’ Dystrophy: Corneal Highe…

2021

Background and Objectives: The objective of this paper is to compare the visual outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after bilateral ultrathin Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) with bilateral penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (FED). Materials and Methods: Retrospective comparative cohort study, including 11 patients with FED who underwent bilateral PK and 13 patients with FED who underwent bilateral UT-DSAEK. All patients were already pseudophakic or had undergone a combined cataract procedure. The main outcomes were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs), contrast sensitivity (CS) and quali…

Results of the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD)

1986

Since 1980, when we developed substitute for the internal anal sphicter, the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD-plasty), we have operated on seven children using this method, usually in combination with the pull-through procedure, and on five children after one or more previous operations. Since 1983, 11 cases with previous operations have undergone the modified “door-wing” SMFD-plasty. The results are excellent if the operation is used in primary combination with the pull-through procedure or if the “door-wing” modification is combined with reconstruction of the pelvic floor. It is also necessary that all cases undergo a biofeedback conditioning program.
